Treating the Patient with a Mutilating Hand Injury: The Reconstructive Village
Description:
The Igbo proverb tells us it takes a village to raise a child, but it also takes a “Reconstructive Village” to treat the patient with a devastating hand injury. Hand surgeons must work with the hand therapists, reconstructive psychologists, work-reconditioning therapists, and case managers to deliver the patient back to society. Lessons learned from thirty years of experience working in a team environment will be shared.
Objective(s):
- Understand the multiple stages involved in the care of the mutilated hand.
- Describe the role of the rehabilitation psychologist in returning the injured worker back to work.
- Compare outcomes of reconstructive procedures for the mangled extremity
