How to Fight Burnout: Lessons in Resilience

Description:

Burnout amongst hand therapists has only worsened during the global pandemic. This is taking a toll on the wellbeing of the therapist and has a direct impact on patient outcomes.

This workshop will be both a didactic and interactive experience. It is geared towards the therapist who is seeking to re-energize their self, decrease burnout, maximize therapy outcomes, and better manage workplace stress. It will emphasize hands-on practical learning skills that can be applied to the clinical and educational setting immediately following the workshop. Communication skills and the principles of self-care, including active listening, use of boundaries, and a strength-based approach, will be combined with the latest scientific studies from the field of positive psychology. Tools and strategies using a highly experiential methodology based on the research of Brené Brown, PhD, and her curriculum The Daring WayTM, will also be implemented.

By integrating these evidence-based tools and strategies within the treatment plan, therapists have the potential for a more meaningful impact on those we serve in the workplace. These methods and techniques which use empathy and compassion can also be applied to the work we do in our communities. They can have a profound affect on how we treat ourselves, both personally and professionally.

Objective(s):

  • 1. Understand how to apply evidence-based tools and strategies designed to decrease clinician burnout and improve well-being at work and beyond.
  • 2. Understand and apply the latest evidence-based studies from the field of positive psychology as they relate to the healthcare environment and their relevance to optimizing outcomes.
  • 3. Describe how to develop patient /therapist trust to improve adherence, maximize outcomes while limiting clinician burnout.
